Let’s Stop Abusing This Verse Of The Scripture - (Romans
8:28)
“And
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them
who are the called according to his purpose.”
(Romans 8:28)
It has become a norm among the
Christian fold or believers that whenever there is a setback in their career or
a disappointing situation in their life the only verse in the bible they run
with as a consolation verse is the verse above. The truth is that the verse
above has nothing to do with one’s failure or negative situation in life. It is
an oxymoron to state that all negative situations or things work for the good
of the believer. God forbid!
Now, let’s clarify this verse and
understand properly what it says. Firstly, the original Greek text differs from
the English text that we read, for instance, the statement “To them that love
God is wrong because the original Greek text states “To them that God loves”.
This is true because (1) Our call of God doesn’t depend on our love for God but
the other way round (2) Man doesn’t have the wherewithal to love God, man is
very selfish in nature, it is the love of God for us that has saved us. Therefore,
in order to help us to love, God has to pour His love in heart Roman 5:5.
Note: This same issue is found in
(1Cor 2:9).
However, to grasp the meaning of what
Romans 8:28 is saying, one has to go back to verse 26, and understand that it
is because of man’s weakness the Spirit of God intercedes for man, verse 27
confirms the ability of the Spirit in doing that, and such takes place because
of God’s Love for man which is expressed in verse 29 and 30. The things found
in verse 29 and 30 are the things that work together for them that He called. In
verse 31, the writer cuts off to complete the expression he made in verse 1-4, which
is a defense built against the law. Then he continues to emphasize on that till
he gets to verse 38 and 39 he concludes/solidifies his assertions in 28, 29 and
30.
Make no mistakes, no negative thing
can take us away from the Love of God, (because we are loved of God) and the
negative things cannot work for our good. God cannot employ the tools of the
enemy to deal with His own people. Remember the thought of God for His people is
not for evil (Jeremiah 29:11) as a result, negative things doesn’t bring glory
to God because they don’t come from Him and cannot work for your good.
1.
The thought of God for you is that you be in good health,
if you are sick, it is not the thought of God for you and cannot bring glory to
God, therefore resist sickness!
2.
The thought of God is that you be rich and if your poor
it is not from God and such do not bring glory to God, therefore, resist
poverty!
3.
The thought of God is that you are gainfully employed and
if you are sacked or rejected for an interview it is not of God and cannot
bring any glory to God.
4.
When your farmland did not yield increase is not of God,
because the thought of God for you is that you should cultivate and reap
plenty.
5.
When the wind comes to destroy your house, it is not from
God, because the thought of God for you is that you should build and inhabit.
6.
Since these things and many negative things are not from
God, surely they are from the devil and devil cannot work for your good!
As all the negative things are not from
God, therefore we should reject and resist them from happening to us, we don’t
give thanks for them but we give thanks in them (1Thess 5:18) because Romans
8:37 declared that we are more than conquerors, through God that loved us (here
again his love makes us to have the victory not our ability). Also see Jude
1:20. And Psalm 34:19 gives us the assurance of victory no matter what!
In conclusion, the only thing that
works for our good in any situation is the LOVE of God for us.
