Topic:
Where To Base Our Judgment (Part 9)
Continued from the last
episode-
Another thing one should take cognizant of is one’s ear.
The ear is the medium through which sound is transmitted to our brain and as a
result, the brain processes it and the mind creates an understanding of what
the sound is. The processing and understanding of the sound will result into
what the next action to take is. The hearer immediately reacts and response to
the sound according to how he understands what the sound represents.
The key factor to hold on is understanding! what one
understood may differ from what another understood hence different
interpretation may arise and different decision may be taken but the subject
matter is the same. The believer therefore, must be careful not just about what
he hears but also about how he processes what he hears. Jesus speaking in the
book of Mark puts it this way “And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear:
with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear
shall more be given.” (Mark 4:24). This important advice from our Lord is very
vital and must be accepted among all believers. The very fact that the ear is
one of the gateways to the heart is enough reason to be careful about the
information that is passed through it to our heart.
It is an understandable fact that believers are in the world and
in the world there are several activities that goes on. Jesus speaking in the book of John says “And he said unto them, Ye are
from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.”
(John 8:32). This is an indication that the world has its own pattern and is
very different from that of Jesus Christ, hence the declaration “I am not of
this world”. The important thing to examine here is the difference and the
cause of the difference.
Jesus making this declaration, mean that the ways of the
world and His own ways are not same because of the pattern of the world. The
pattern therefore, is the product or output of the processing of the mind. It
is important to point out that the mind can only process what it has heard and
whatever is deduced from the processing becomes the pattern. The pattern
here is the reflection of the nature of the entity. I mean it gives definition
to what the making of the entity is. And Jesus also said in the same book of
John that “ My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36) meaning my
administrative pattern is not of this world, that is the way and manner He
organize and display things are different from the way and manner the world
does theirs.
Yet Jesus went on to declare that “I pray not for the
world” (John17:9). Jesus said this because He has nothing to do with the world,
the world here implies the ways and manner things are being conducted in the earth.
Speaking concerning those that believed in Him he said these words “They are
not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” (John17:15). This is a
remarkable statement and shouldn’t be ignore by any believer because it is an
assurance to a believer that he is not of the system of this world. And because
of this Jesus prayed thus for them “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word
is truth.” (John17:17).
Why Jesus prayed this prayer is because He knew that the
only thing that can penetrate the ears of any believer and still keep him
sanctified is the truth which He called the Word. The implication of this is
that the believer should always open his ears to the word of God and shuts his
ears to every other word that emanates from the world and its system because
such will defile him. When a believer hears the Word of God and processed it in
his heart the output of it is always sanctification. No wonder Apostle Paul
while advising his audience in Colossi declared to them thus “Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to
the Lord.” (Colossians 3:16). Notice that the Word can only dwell in you if you
listen to it always.
