Text Of Interest:
“But ye are come unto mount
Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an
innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the
firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the
spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of the new
covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that
of Abel.”
Heb 12:22 – 24 (KJV)
Therefore, mount Zion is an epitome of
freedom, and because of that no one in it, should be assumed to be in captivity
or bondage of some sorts. All the occupants of mount Zion are the delivered
lots, they need not to be delivered again, and of course, one is not expected
to seek for freedom while he or she is free. Jesus speaking in the gospel
says and I quote “If the Son therefore
shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”(John 8:36). The delivered
lots have been set free and they are free indeed, but like I rightly pointed
out earlier, what the need is to understand the new environment which they have
come into and consequently identify with the things available in it. Another
thing to note is that, this mount was not just referred as the city of the
living God, which makes it a possession of God; also it is called the “heavenly
Jerusalem”. It is interesting to know that the word Jerusalem is a combination
of two Hebrew words Jeru meaning a city and salem meaning peace. In other
words, Jerusalem means city of peace. Here, the location of this city is in
heaven, so it is referred as the heavenly Jerusalem. The Greek word translated
heaven is the word Epouranios, meaning a place that is real but in the
abstract. So this Jerusalem is not the
physical Jerusalem, is therefore spiritual and so whatever the writer of the
book of Hebrews is referring to here is not a tangible thing but something that is connoting spiritual reality.
The city of the living God, which is
also called the heavenly Jerusalem is a spiritual entity and as a result can
never be governed by physical principles, which implies that the occupants of
this city are not governed by manmade or physical rules. The delivered lots
(believers) exist within the precepts of the city and these precepts are
spiritual in nature, which on the other is a total paradox to the manmade or
natural precepts. The only thing that has control or authority over the life of
the believer is the precepts of the city he or she now lives. Trying to induce
a physical concept to have dominion over him will not work unless and otherwise
he is ignorant of where he is or who he has become, hence the need to
understand where the believer has come into and who he has been made to be.
Therefore, it is an understandable fact that as the believer has been brought
into the Kingdom of God’s Son, which is the city of the living God, aka the
heavenly Jerusalem, his life is pivoted and of course revolves around the
trajectory of the spiritual precepts.
To properly align himself in this
spiritual trajectory, the believer should understand who his associates in this
spiritual realm are. And understanding of this very important fact will
definitely make his life and existence in this realm easy. In this spiritual
entity called the city of the living God, and the heavenly Jerusalem, the
believer do not as a matter of fact have the company of physical human but he
has come into the company of innumerable angels. These angels are there for
him, to give him the necessary service and treatment he needs. Here, the writer
of the book of Hebrews calls them this and I quote “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them
who shall be heirs of salvation?”(Hebrews 1:14).They are his ministers, they
minister to his needs, they go ahead of him, creating circumstances and
situations that can cause him to be favored, though it depends on his ability to
detect their functions and activities in his life. This is very vital because
many believers, though they are believers misses the service of these angels in
their life because they lack what it takes to detect when they are at work in
their life.
The services of the angels create a
unique lifestyle or living condition that is not comparable with what is obtainable
in the world. This is so, because the operation of the angels makes a
believer’s life appear different from the life a man in the world lives though
both cohabits the world. The benefits of the services of the angels in the life
of the believer are numerous to mention, but to sum it up; the angels are ever
ready to serve the heirs of salvation in all their endeavors at any given time. They were created by God for these purposes and they are not shying away
from it. It is left in the hand of the believer to always request or better
still command for their services in his life and they will comply because it
behooves on them to do so!
