“But
ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly
Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and
church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of
all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of
the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things
than that of Abel.”
Heb 12:22 –
24 (KJV)
A believer without self-control is
very vulnerable as a result he or she can walk into the trap of the enemy at any time. Though he
is a believer his life will always be in a mess because he lacks how to control
himself in the time of temptations and advances of the enemy. A believer who
lacks self-control often times finds himself in fisticuffs with believers and
non-believers and such demeans his status as a believer. Therefore, it is a
matter of necessity for him to add self-control to his character so that the
beauty of who he is will shine in and around him. The good news is that it
doesn’t take a rocket science approach to be self-controlled; it simply means
that someone should listen to the instruction of the Holy Ghost and draws from
the deposit He has made in his spirit when situations arise. Also by reading
and believing the word you have read from the pages of the bible. For instance,
if you have read from the Bible that you shouldn’t have fisticuffs with anybody,
you better follow the instruction even in the face of such temptation you stick
to what the word says and by so doing you culture yourself in that direction
and it became a way of life for you.
And of course you have read or being
instructed not to lie and situations are coming that lures one to lie, no matter
what the consequence(s) of saying the truth portrays you should stay put with
the truth. A self-controlled believer don’t swing like a pendulum rather
anchors or pivots himself within what the Scripture has said; thereby
maintaining his status as described in the Scripture. This depicts that a
believer should not allow himself to be controlled by events or situation that
crops of up in his life, he should take control of the situation by
superimposing his authority over the situation. Being resilient and adamant is
the watch word here, which makes a self-controlled believer a principled
person, and not just a principled person but one who is principled within the
dictums of the Scripture.A self-controlled believer can be seen as someone who
is reliable and can be trusted with matters of great weight and people can be
rest assured that he will not mess things up. Because the tendency for him to
be tossed about with every wind of events is very rare and he stands trusted.
When one is self-controlled is obvious that he can handle issues involving engagement
in all facets of human endeavors. It points out that he can be a good leader,
in the church, in the family and in public institution.
However, Apostle Peter went ahead to
suggest to the believers that to their self-control they should add patience.
This is very essential in the life of any believer, because without patience,
no matter how much faith therein in a believer, the strength of the faith
cannot fully manifest. It is important for a believer to have faith and also
develop it, but the pillar faith stands is the believer’s level of patience. If
the believer lacks patience his faith will definitely fail him. This is because
if situations crop up in the life of the believer, it takes faith to say no or not
to recognize the existence of the situation but while the situation lasts it
takes patience to cope in it. Therefore, what consumes the pain of the
situation is patience while faith neutralizes its existence. This implies that
a believer without patience can be a victim of abortive process in his life
though he has faith. Patience therefore, galvanizes the faith of the believer
because a believer that has rooted himself into being patient will definitely
overcome situations and mostly achieve better results in his life.
Apostle
Paul while writing to the Ephesians in his epistle says and I quote “Praying
always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto
with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”(Eph 6:18). Here, the word he used is
perseverance which means patience. The example he used here is in praying and
this is where the patience a believer is tried mostly, because there is this
tendency for quick answers to prayers and is very important for a believer to
wait and wait in this aspect. The ability to wait for answers when a believer
has prayed matters and that is why Apostle Paul admonishes believers thus “watching thereunto with all perseverance”.
The word watching here implies a continuous thing, meaning waiting. The waiting
or watching is patience in action; the praying is the demonstration of faith in
action. It is understandable that praying is like when one has gone to plant
seeds in the farmland, the seeds have to undergo the process of germination and
thereafter the process of growth and afterward the bearing of fruits. So the
seed’s planter has to wait to see these processes being completed before he can
harvest anything out of the farmland. If he doesn’t wait, it means that he will
abandon the farmland and by so doing he cannot reap anything out of it!
